The Glass City Soccer Club is the competitive travel soccer division of the Washington Local Recreational Soccer League, located in Toledo, OH. It is designed to help the player who is ready to take the next step to becoming a better, more complete soccer player. Our coaches have a wide range of soccer education, playing and coaching experiences.
Commonly Asked Questions:
What is competitive travel soccer? Our club plays in the local soccer league NWOYSL. We complete against teams from Maumee, Perrysburg, Sylvania, Oregon, Findlay, Toledo, Napoleon, Defiance, Bryan and Archbold. While this list looks long, we do not play against all of these teams. Clubs are placed in divisions based upon skill the skill level of their teams. We play 10-12 games per season. The teams play on a home and away schedule. Our home fields are at Shoreland Elementary School and Erme Field. The Washington Local School System allows us to use their fields at no charge, however, we supply our own equipment and line our fields. League standing are kept and awards are given out after each season. The soccer level is more challenging, but we contract coaches who have the experience to make our players ready for that challenge.
Cost? Our club fees for this level of soccer are the lowest of any team in the area. We charge $70 per player per season, spring and fall. Our licensed coaches are paid a coaching fee between $100-$130 per player per season. There is a uniform cost that usually starts at $50. It may sound like a lot of money but if you research the other clubs in the area we are one of the lowest. Our goal is to keep the fees down so everyone can play wants to play. We have several payment plans available. Many players work off their fees by refereeing in the recreational program and fundraising.
Who are our coaches? Our coaches are selected very carefully. We want good people as well as good coaches. Our licensed coaches have been certified through one of the two coaching schools available in the United States. These two schools are the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Coaching Academy and the United States Soccer Federation Coaching Schools. Both are excellent soccer coaching education organizations. These coaching schools have different levels of training based upon the coach's level of knowledge and experience. You have to advance, just like school, from one level to the next. There is field training, classroom instruction, and testing that takes place before a particular license is given to a coach. None of our coaches are contracted as a full time coach.
Our current licensed coach is:
Kevin Lanning, Director of Coaching and Player Development. Kevin holds the Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA. He has 26 years of coaching experience at the youth, high school, and college levels. He is a former local high school and college player, who has played professionally in the USISL. Some of Kevin's former players have gone on to play at such schools as Ohio State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Findlay, George Mason, Miami of Ohio, Marshall, Cornell and Tiffin. He has also had a few players who have played professionally or been in professional training camps in the USISL, the WUSA, and in Europe. His wife Dawn, Children Tegan and Kevin Jr. reside in Toledo.
This is just a brief overview of the Glass City Soccer organization. GSC in non-profit and run by volunteer officers who are driven by the love of the game and community. One of our main goals is to develop young players who will be able to complete at the high school and college level. If your questions has not been answered you may contact the President via email.
